Temple Grandin nacque quando la sindrome autistica era poco conosciuta. Essendole stato diagnosticato un danno cerebrale all'età di due anni, fu ospitata in una scuola materna specializzata, dove fu seguita da buoni insegnanti. Anni più tardi le fu diagnosticata la Sindrome di Asperger. Conseguì una laurea in psicologia al Franklin Pierce College, poi si laureò in zoologia all'Università Statale dell'Arizona, e completò poi il dottorato di ricerca in zoologia presso l'Università dell'Illinois nel 1989.
